What Are the Factors Affecting Extrusion Ratio?

The extrusion rate is the ratio between the billet area used in the extrusion process and the cross-sectional area of the produced profile. In other words:

Extrusion Ratio = Billet Area / Profile Area

Factors that affect the extrusion ratio:

  • Press capacity: More powerful presses can achieve higher extrusion ratio.
  • Die design: The shape and size of the holes in the die influence the extrusion ratio.
  • Aluminum alloy type: Different alloys can be produced with varying extrusion ratio.
  • Extrusion temperature: Higher temperatures result in an increased extrusion ratio.

Advantages of a high extrusion ratio:

  • More complex profiles can be produced.
  • Less material waste occurs.
  • Production time is reduced.

Disadvantages of a high extrusion ratio:

  • Requires higher press force.
  • The die may be more complex and expensive.
  • The risk of extrusion defects increases.
